During the Belle Époque period in France, Absinthe was the drink of choice among the bohemian populace in the cafes and cabarets.  Artists who frequently imbibed, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Toulouse Lautrec and Degas, all featured the drink in many of their works.  This advertisment for Pierrot was created by Lucien Métivet in 1911.  Three years later, France followed Britain and The United States and outlawed the drink in France.
